Screens, or shielding, are widely utilized in instrumentation and signal cables to minimize or eliminate potential interference and noise.

    Such disturbances typically arise from two main sources:
  • Cross-talk between adjacent pairs or triads within the cables.
  • External interference from nearby electrical equipment, machinery, or power lines.

Screen Types

  • Aluminum/polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire: The most common type of construction.
  • Copper/polyester tape with a tinned copper drain wire: Provides enhanced shielding effectiveness.
  • Bare copper braid: Ideal for electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction, especially when cables experience frequent movement.
  • Tinned copper braid: Effective against EMI in corrosive environments.
  • Conductor: Made of plain annealed or tinned circular stranded copper, complying with BS 6360 / IS:8130 standards.
  • Insulation: Composed of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) or PE (Polyethylene).
  • Pairing: Two insulated cores are uniformly twisted to form pairs with a maximum lay length of 100 mm. For cables with an overall screen, two pairs will have four cores arranged in a quad formation.
  • Pair Identification: Color-coded as per Appendix B or specific customer requirements.
  • Cabling: Twisted pairs are laid together and, if needed, filled with non-hygroscopic material compatible with the insulation.
  • Overall Screening: The accumulated pairs are screened with an aluminum/mylar tape, helically applied with the metallic side facing inward. The tape is in electrical contact with a tinned 2 mm annealed copper drain wire of 0.5 mm.
  • Sheath: Outer sheath is made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride).
  • Conductor: Made of plain annealed or tinned circular stranded copper, complying with BS 6360 / IS:8130 standards.
  • Insulation: Composed of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) or PE (Polyethylene).
